RATTAN CHADHA’S GOLDEN TIP: KNOW THE STORY

“It has to have more layers than what you see!” says the esteemed Art Collector Rattan Chadha. Go beyond the beauty and aesthetics of an artwork, and choose something that you also connect with personally, whether it’s the story that the artwork tells, or the themes and motifs it uses that resonate with you.

JOCELYN HOBBIE’S GOLDEN TIP: BUY WHAT YOU LOVE AND KEEP IT

One of our favorite Art Fix artists, the greatly talented Jocelyn Hobbie’s recommendation is: “Buy what you love, especially if you’re going to live with your art.” While it’s good to know lots about your work and the artist, you also have to think about the aesthetics of the artwork in your home, and whether you’ll still enjoy looking at it a few years down the road.

JEAN PAUL ENGELEN’S GOLDEN TIP: START A LIBRARY

Phillips’ auction house director Jean Paul Engelen knows how important it is to do due diligence and put in the work before you splurge! He lives by the philosophy: “You can only buy what you know,” so make sure to read up on whichever artist or artwork you’re interested in before handing over your credit card. Sometimes it’s as easy as following your favorite artist on socials and keeping up to date with what they’re doing.

AMAR SINGH’S GOLDEN TIP: MAKE SURE IT WILL HOLD ITS VALUE

It’s easy to burn through money fast while collecting, says the collector and gallerist Amar Singh. If you’re willing to pay major cash for an artwork, make sure the artist will hold their value in the future, so you’re making a sound investment. You can test this by checking whether the artist has been or will be picked up by larger museums and galleries across the world.

MARTA GNYP’S GOLDEN TIP: BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH GALLERIES

Art advisors know it best, and Marta Gnyp is one of the best around! Take it from her when she says “Access is everything!” Not everyone will get primary access to desired works, and you can’t exactly call dibs in the artworld, so work on your network in the artworld and cosy up to gallerists and artists.

HENRY RELPH’S GOLDEN TIP: GO TO ART FAIRS

Influencer Henry Relph urges you to travel far and near, to as many art fairs and biennials within your reach, so you can see your coveted artworks that you fell in love with through your screen in person, and be wowed by them all over again! It’s also a great way to get acquainted with gallerists, artists and other collectors and exchange your thoughts with them.

LORENZO FIASCHI’S GOLDEN TIP: COLLECT WHAT YOU LOVE

The gallery owner Lorenzo Fiaschi, who co-founded the esteemed Galleria Continua, has a flaming passion for the arts, and you can tell from his statement: “Art is about love and friendship.” The best thing about art is being able to share your love for it with like-minded people, your friends and family. So collect what you love, and the love is sure to spread!
