Art Fix Holiday Gift Guide '21

With Christmas around the corner, it’s time to start ticking things off our holiday to-do list. For many of us, the idea of spoiling our loved ones (and ourselves) is an exciting, but sometimes overwhelming activity. Let Art Fix help you make things a little bit easier by narrowing down the options. From deco lovers and collectors to bookworms and little artists, we have curated a list of the best art-themed gifts for this Christmas season.

Frida Kahlo Christmas Ornament

A big art fan? Frida fanatic? This is the coolest addition to your Christmas tree. We are conflicted with which Christmas tree ornament is our favorite this year. Which one do you like better?

Vincent van Gogh Christmas Tree Decoration

No need for an introduction. Portrayed in his essence – earless and with a ginger beard – Dutch icon adds the perfect final touch to your Christmas tree decoration.

David Shrigley Opening Hours Mug

If you wake up on the wrong side of bed and are feeling quirky, this “fully breakable ceramic” mug featuring David Shrigley’s Opening Hours is the one to use when you join your work Zoom meeting early in the morning. We bet your colleagues will love it!

Frida Kahlo Oyster Ring Dish

Another one for our Frida fans! Featuring Frida Khalo’s most vibrant portrait, this shell makes the ideal multipurpose decoration dish. What will you put on it, Fixer?

Hockney A Bigger Splash Cushion Cover

The best gifts are those we never really knew we needed. Brighten up any room with this square cushion cover featuring David Hockney’s iconic painting, A Bigger Splash (1967). The digitally printed image is complemented by a contrasting yellow back.

Mondrian Coasters

We’ve seen Mondrian into a dress, but we will leave Yves Saint Laurent out of the list for now. Instead, these Mondrian coasters are the next best thing you can give out to any art lover!

Frida Kahlo Porcelain Mug

In case you hadn’t noticed yet, we love Frida! Sipping coffee out of this mug in the morning will definitely brighten your days.

Ai Weiwei Cappuccino Cups – Set of 4 Cups

Drawing inspiration from his Coloured Bases (2006), ready-made he created by dipping ancient Neolithic vases into industrial paint, distorting their appearance and overturning their original function. Coffee and art, is there a better way to start your day?

Grayson Perry silk scarf

Exclusively for Tate, Grayson Perry created this silk scarf to take us through the history of modern art. “In the second world war pilots were given maps printed on silk to help them escape if they were shot down over enemy territory. This scarf is a social and cultural map to help aspiring artists navigate the hostile territory on their way to being accepted by the establishment. Many famous artists who can help them live along the route” Stylish and informative? We buy it!

Takashi Murakami And Virgil Abloh: “America Too” T-Shirt

Another collaboration for people who follow the hype. This limited-edition T-shirt was created by Takashi Murakami and Virgil Abloh on the occasion of Murakami & Abloh: “AMERICA TOO” exhibition at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. The back of the shirt shows their collaborative painting TIMES: FLAMES (2018), in which the signature arrows of Abloh’s label Off-White are overlaid with multicolored flames rendered in Murakami’s Superflat style. Will you make one of the editions yours?

Andy Warhol Skull Maharishi Stadium Jacket

As part of an exclusive Tate collaboration with environmentally conscious designer clothing company maharishi and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, a raw edge applique skull from Andy Warhol’s Skull (1976) series adorns the back of the jacket, as well as a signature and quote from Andy Warhol himself – “everybody’s sense of beauty is different from everybody else’s” – embroidered in the artist’s handwriting.

Calder Mini Bucket Bag

A purse is a woman’s (or man’s) best friend; and if it features a Alexander Calder’s boldly colored standing mobile, Untitled (1972), even better. This collection of four bags by Mansur Gavriel is the perfect twist to the mini bucket bag.

Venus & Cupid T-shirt

Graphic t-shirts are everywhere. We get it, been there done that. However, you are not ready for this Venus & Cupid inspired organic cotton t-shirt. A go to for Rubens’ fans!

We love Jack Whitten’s Quantum Wall paintings and it doesn’t get better than that printed on a scarf 190 x 32 cm made in Como by local craftsmen.

Toyin Ojih Odutola: The UmuEze Amara Clan and the House of Obafemi

Discourses about race, wealth and class are finally getting more present in our daily life – and it is something we all know we must educate ourselves about despite its complex nature. That is why this book is a must read; through storytelling and multimedia drawings, this masterpiece by Toyin Ojih Odutola narrates the chronicles of the private lives of two fictional aristocratic Nigerian families, the UmuEze Amara Clan and the House of Obafemi, if colonialist and slave-trade interventions had never disrupted the country.

Most of us can recall our first art related memory – it is a thought we like to keep and cherish. This book is the perfect way for the little ones to discover the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream. A great one for art’s little promises. These three books about women artists who thrived in their creative careers are the gift any little girl deserves. Sure, fairy tales are great – but after all, becoming an artist is easier than becoming a princess.

Flore Zoé – Artist Portrait

Do you remember that time during the first lockdown when we all started baking bread and getting creative. You might have heard of “Tussen Kunst & Quarantaine” (@tussenkunstenquarantaine), which became a big success on Instagram during the pandemic. The account consisted of an art challenge for everyone who was stuck at home and who needed a creative outlet; the challenge consisted in recreating historical paintings with objects we all had at home – from turning your family into a Keith Haring painting to dressing up as the “Girl with the Pearl Earring”. Flore puts her personal touch to this concept by transforming you into an artwork by portraying you in the same way that her artworks are made. Julian Opie: Amelia, gold

Amelia is one of our favorite characters in Julian Opie’s world. You can now always have her by your side with this keyholder. Keep an eye out as she might just walk away.

Jean Michel Basquiat Exercise mat

Based on Basquiat’s In Italian painting – which funnily enough features many words in different european languages other than Italian, such as sangre, which is Spanish for “blood” – this yoga mat is the ideal gadget to let know your gym peers loud and clear that you really are into art.

Amsterdam Light Festival is currently in conversation with the Dutch Government as for how the Covid-19 related new restrictions impact the event.
