What's on in Amsterdam

A weekend in Amsterdam is high on most people's wish list. As far as European capitals go, the cosy Dutch capital has a unique blend of sophistication and sin.

Maybe you’ve strolled the canals, indulged in Dutch pancakes, or visited a coffee shop, but have you experienced what the Amsterdam art world has to offer? This September, the art season kicks off with the Unseen photography fair in the Westergasfabriek, accompanied by many photography shows.

One Of a Kind – 10-year anniversary show at The Ravestijn Gallery

A great start is this wonderful exhibition in Centrum West at The Ravestijn Gallery, a true reflection of the love that the two owners, Narda and Jasper, hold for conceptual photography. 

The special anniversary show brings together a selection of new and unique -one of a kind – works, each made by a different artist the gallery either represents or has worked with in the last 10 years, such as this lenticular work by KYoung.

Angela Heisch: Gilded Slides at GRIMM Gallery

Moving on to the Keizersgracht, one of the most beautiful canals of Amsterdam. Here you find Grimm Gallery currently showing works by Angela Heisch, her luminous use of colour is incredible – a must-see exhibition. 

Helena van der Kraan: Still (a) Life at Madé van Krimpen  Gallery 

This show is the ultimate tribute to the Still Life photography works by the late Czech-Dutch photographer Helena van der Kraan (1940-2020). Still (a) Life offers a beautiful glimpse of Van der Kraan’s unrivalled ability to capture the memories and fleeting moments that make up life. 

Sheila Hicks at EENWERK

Like contemporary crafts? Do not miss Sheila Hicks at EENWERK. An art space where you’ll only find one artwork at a time. This visit, you’ll find a work by Art Fix fave, Sheila Hicks. The 88 year old American artist is known for her sculptural textile art and weavings in distinctive colours and natural materials.

Ed van der Elsken: Theatre of Reality at Annet Gelink Gallery

The Annet Gelink gallery is tucked away in the charming neighbourhood, the Jordaan. The exhibition, titled Theatre of Reality, shows works by the very famous Dutch 20th-century photographer and cineast Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990). There is a great explanation of each photo available.

Pieter Hugo: Solus at Stevenson

Into portrait photography? Visit Stevenson Gallery to experience the works by South African photographer Pieter Hugo, who captures intriguing portraits of street-cast models. 

Carlos & Jason Sanchez at Torch 

If you’re looking for an exhibition with thrill and mystery, head to Torch Gallery to view the photographs by the Sanchez brothers. The artist duo meticulously photograph stage scenes that fill the viewers with suspense.

Anastasia Samoylova: Floridas at Caroline O’Breen

Late summer sunshine? At gallery Caroline O’Breen you’ll find photographs inspired by Florida, known for its sunshine, beaches, Latin-American influences and Art Deco buildings – but with emphasis on the decaying nature of Florida in detail.

Marguerite Bornhauser: Étiole Rétine at Bildhalle

Do you love colour and perspective? This is the exhibition for you. Head to Bildhalle for the talented French photographer Bornhauser, a master of seduction.

Autofiction Group Show at Fons Welters

Marc Mulders at Kers Gallery

Painter and glazier Marc Mulders’ large abstract canvases are filled with fish and bird figures, flowers and numerous organic motifs – elements that must be seen in the flesh.

Daniel van Straalen: MEME-A-LISM at Stigter Van Doesburg 

In case you’re  wondering what MEME-A-LISM is about? It is art with a direct reference to the rich heritage of meme culture. What is a meme? An amusing item, idea or style that spreads,  such as a captioned picture on social media.

The Best of Graduates 2022 at Galerie Ron Mandos 

Interested in emerging and super talented artists, head to Galerie Ron Mandos. They have selected the very best graduates of the Dutch art academies. Expect photographs with a super interesting AR layer bij Kwadwo Amfo, an installation with handmade carpets by Marcos Kueh, paintings by Bobbi Essers and ceramic objects by 

Spencer Tunick: Public Interventions at Reflex 

A must-see is the show of the American Spencer Tunick who we featured in Episode 15 “Bare it All”. He raises awareness with Nude art and has a unique practice, photographing massive crowds of nude people in complex performance, true “human installations”.

Sophie Steengracht, Jonat Deelstra and Matt de Groot: Bloom at GoMulan Gallery

And last but not least visit the gallery of this super talented girl. Mulan opened her gallery 4 years ago at the age of 19. In September she will show Art Fix favorite Sophie Steengracht alongside Jonathan Deelstra and Matt de Groot. We can’t wait!

Barbara Hepworth at the Rijksmuseum Gardens 

We just love the Rijksmuseum gardens, a gem on the Museumplein. Tip: Not payday yet? This show is free.

Maaike Schoorel at Willet-Holthuysen Museum 

A wonderful solo show  of delicate, dreamlike, and soft paintings. 

Gustav Klimt at The Van Gogh Museum

We can not wait for this autumn when the exhibition Golden Boy opens about Gustav Klimt and the many artists who inspired him, such as… Vincent van Gogh.

Marina Abramović: No Intermission at Koninklijk Theater Carré

7 Deaths Of Maria Callas at Koninklijk Theater Carré

Opera lovers this one is for you, a special opera project: “The 7 Deaths of Maria Callas” will enjoy its Dutch premiere exclusively in Carré Amsterdam on four nights. This opera is a performance with live music by internationally renowned sopranos. Abramovic herself will both be present live and also together with actor Willem Dafoe on-screen.

Giuseppe Penone at Voorlinden 

On the back of the blockbuster exhibition by Antony Gormley, museum Voorlinden will open with a large retrospective of the Arte Povera artist Giuseppe Penone. Remember him from Episode 14 “The Outdoors is Calling”?

Ton of Holland: Face Swap at Galerie Ramakers Den Haag 

FACE – SWAP shows 17 portraits composed of faces of dozens of strangers from all kinds of cultures, who together have created one “new” archetype face. At the same time Ton Hoogerwerf (Ton of Holland) is part of the exhibition Cubic 3 Design at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
