sold outSprawled out horizontally across crisp white sheets, Gideon Rubin’s distinctive faceless figure leaves each viewer wondering in their own way. Perhaps it evokes feelings of a lazy Sunday morning lie-in, or a candlelit anticipatory moment captured just before a long, wild night? Rather than representing a specific identity, each viewer can recognize in this image a memory, a suggestion, a muse, an inspiration. “I’d like to think the figures in my paintings remind the viewer of certain people, or evoke memories, rather than portray specific identities,” explains the artist. “Black Tights” is made using Rubin’s signature use of grey blues and off-whites, and is the perfect Rubin blend of mystery and suggestivity.
