The sculpture Happy Birthday, 2020 served as the inspiration for the upcoming collaboration, transforming a celebratory moment into a contemplative, larger-than-life work. Drawing from this iconic artwork, the Art Fix edition A Piece of Cake will reimagine the motif in a true-to-life-size form with new details: a candle and a plump blackberry, resting on a plate with a fork.
With A Piece of Cake, as in much of Hans Op de Beeck’s oeuvre, the absence of colour sharpens shadows and surfaces. A simple moment of celebration subtly shifts in meaning: the birthday cake becomes a reminder of time passing, of memories gathered, and of life’s quiet fragility.
